Robert Eugene Howell, age 85, of Shoals, Indiana, passed away on Wednesday, January 22, 2020.
Martin County has lost one of it greatest storytellers. Bob always had a smile on his face, never met a stranger, and loved to tell jokes and stories.
Bob loved his family with all his heart. Bob was blessed to have two loving families. He was born to Berl and Doris Howell on February 12, 1934, and was raised by his aunt and uncle, Ruth and Charles Sorrells.
Bob had a large family of siblings and cousins who he grew up with. Bob’s brothers included John, deceased, and Dick; and sisters, Cloe Anne, deceased; Beverly, deceased; and Jane and Sue. Bob grew up with cousins, Jim Sorrells, deceased; and Fred Sorrells and Eddie Sorrells.
Bob joined the Army in May of 1954. It should surprise no one that Bob was a “Communications Center Specialist” while in the Army. His active duty was during the Korean Conflict and his service ended in May of 1956. Bob continued to serve his country by being in the Army Reserves from 1956 through 1962. Following his honorable discharge from the Army, he became a licensed Plumbing Contractor. He served Martin County as a County Commissioner from 1978 through 1982. Bob was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church of Shoals.
In May of 1957, Bob married the love of his life, Carolyn (Sutton) Howell. They shared over 62 years of marriage.
Survivors include his wife, Carolyn; and his son, Robert Joseph and Kimberly Howell. Bob loved his four grandchildren and couldn’t have been any more proud of them, Brian Joseph Howell and Evan Robert Howell, both of Bloomington; Mackenzie Crooks, of Chicago; and Jared Crooks, of Jasper.
The family had a private service. Bob requested no public service, and no visitation, probably because he wouldn’t be able to entertain everyone with his stories.
